The Biggest Misconception: "I Am Fine"
Many patients admitted to the ICU often say, "I was fine." When I hear this, I understand that the body had been sending signals for a long time, but the mind did not listen.
1. "I am fine" is not a diagnosis. It is emotional comfort, not a clinical assessment. The body does not listen to feelings; it operates on physiology.
2. Diseases do not make noise. Blood Pressure may rise without pain. Sugar levels may fluctuate unnoticed. Weight gain may not feel urgent. No pain does not mean no problem.
3. Being busy does not mean being healthy. Shortness of breath is often attributed to age. Fatigue is blamed on overwork. Sleep may be insufficient, but the ego remains active.
4. A single report is not the truth. Blood Pressure may be normal today. Sugar levels may be fine today. But what about the pattern, trend, and variability? In medicine, the pattern is more important than a snapshot.
5. Metabolic diseases develop slowly. They cause vascular damage over years. Sudden collapse appears because the damage was silent.
6. Fear is temporary. After ICU, 3-6 months of discipline are needed. Then again, "I am fine." Memory fades; habits win.
7. Important question: Are you fine based on evidence or assumption?
8. Reflect: - When was your last full check-up? - Do you know your waist measurement? - Do you track your sleep quality? - Do you consciously manage stress?
10. Warning: "I am fine" can sometimes be the biggest danger. Because the disease is not progressing; your neglect is increasing.
