Elevated Homocysteine: An Early Warning Sign for Vascular Health

Just For Hearts2 min read

Elevated Homocysteine… This isn't just a number; it's an early warning sign.

Many times, reports are almost normal, but subtle changes have already begun in the body. Homocysteine is a marker that reveals these changes early.

1. What is Homocysteine? A substance produced during protein metabolism in the body. Normally controlled at low levels. Increases when the balance is disturbed.

2. What happens when it's elevated? Subtle damage begins on the inner lining of blood vessels (endothelium). This change isn't immediately noticeable, but the process continues internally.

3. How to understand the value? <15 µmol/L acceptable 10–12 µmol/L ideal A value higher than this indicates a potential increase in long-term vascular risk.

4. Who is it seen more in? Abdominal fat Borderline sugar Family history Unexplained fatigue If these signals appear together, it's likely that the process has already begun.

5. Why does it increase? Low Vitamin B12, B6, folate Lack of physical activity Smoking Disordered lifestyle This number is a reflection of your daily habits.

6. How can you improve it? ✔ Adequate Vitamin B12 and folate ✔ Daily physical activity (30–40 minutes of walking) ✔ Avoiding smoking ✔ Improving your eating and sleep rhythm Consistent small changes will start to shift the numbers.

7. Important to remember: Elevated Homocysteine means that vascular damage is starting at a subtle level in the body. This is not yet a disease, but it's a step towards developing one. If addressed in time, this process can be reversed.

Blockages don't happen suddenly… they start with such subtle changes.
