Understanding High Sugar Levels: More Than Just Numbers
A YouTube comment read: “Doctor, my sugar is Fasting 256 and PP 354... what should I do?”
I haven't met this patient yet. Their Clinical history, examination, and lifestyle information are unknown. However, for me, these two numbers are not just reports. This post explains how I interpret such reports, what I think, and how I understand what the body is trying to say.
1. Fasting 256 → Even after not eating overnight, the liver is producing uncontrolled sugar. Insulin is present, but it's not being heeded.
2. PP 354 → After meals, glucose is not entering the cells. Insulin resistance is fully active.
3. When both these numbers appear together → I don't say 'sugar increased today' → I understand that this metabolic system has been disturbed for a long time.
4. This diabetes doesn't happen suddenly → It's a process of months and years → Fatty liver, abdominal fat, stress, sleep issues – all these are underlying factors.
5. If the patient is not on treatment → This stage cannot be ignored → If the right start is made, damage can be avoided.
6. If these numbers are present even while on treatment → The type/timing of medication might be wrong → Or the metabolism is still not responding. This is a more serious warning.
7. I don't just look at sugar → I read BP, weight, waist circumference, triglycerides → and lifestyle together.
8. No panic, but seriousness is needed → Sugar comes down temporarily → But it doesn't last without fixing the underlying system.
9. I don't immediately increase medication → First, I find out why the body is resisting.
10. This report is not a verdict, it's a warning → If understood in time → The direction of diabetes can change.
This post is not meant to scare you about reports, but to teach you how to understand them.
