Blood Pressure

5 Common but Serious Mistakes Made by Hypertension Patients

Just For Hearts2 min read

Hypertension patients often make these 5 common but serious mistakes:

1. Stopping medication when Blood Pressure is normal ❌ Just because your BP is 120/80 now, it doesn't mean you should stop your medicine. Remember, the BP is normal because of the medication. According to JNC 8 guidelines, only your doctor should decide whether to stop the medicine, not you.

2. Confused timing and dosage schedule ⏰ Taking medicine at inconsistent times like 9 AM, sometimes 11 AM, or forgetting doses can cause fluctuations. Blood pressure control requires steady-state plasma levels, and irregular intake leads to sudden fluctuations. These fluctuations can cause stroke or heart attack.

3. Not paying enough attention to salt intake 🧂 Many say "I don't consume salt," yet they eat papad, pickles, and biscuits 2-3 times daily! Hidden sodium is an underestimated enemy. Processed foods plus various salt types cause salt overload, reducing the effectiveness of medicines.

4. Misunderstanding that just taking BP pills is enough 💊 Many patients take only an ACE inhibitor pill but do not make lifestyle modifications. Walking, weight loss, low salt diet, and avoiding alcohol are equal partners in treatment. These lifestyle changes are the main therapy, not just medicines!

5. Having a BP monitor at home but not using it or using it incorrectly 📉 Some have the machine but forget to track BP during rains, weddings, or picnics. White coat hypertension or masked hypertension cannot be detected without regular monitoring. The American Heart Association recommends taking 2 readings per day for 5–7 days each month.

Blood Pressure is not just a numbers game; it is a silent war happening inside the body that must be understood daily.

"Stopping medicine because BP is low is like stopping antibiotics when you don't have a fever; it looks right but is wrong inside!" ❤ī¸
