Anger and Your Heart: What Science Says

Just For Hearts1 min read

Anger is a natural emotion, but if you have heart disease, diabetes, or high Blood Pressure, anger is like placing a bomb on your heart!

1. Sympathetic Overdrive begins. When anger arises, the body floods with stress hormones like Adrenaline, Noradrenaline, and Cortisol. This causes the heart rate to increase, Blood Pressure to spike rapidly, and blood sugar levels to rise.

2. In Diabetes: Blood Sugar control worsens. Cortisol reduces the effectiveness of Insulin, leading to sudden sugar spikes.

3. High BP: Sudden anger increases the risk of stroke. For those with uncontrolled Blood Pressure, anger can cause a temporary hypertensive emergency.

4. In Heart Disease: Anger shocks the heart. It can cause constriction in the coronary arteries, increase angina, and raise the risk of a Heart Attack.

What can you do at home? Here are 5 simple remedies:

1. Breathing (4-4-4-4): Inhale → Hold → Exhale → Hold. This increases vagal tone and calms the heart.

2. Walk for 5 minutes (Walking Meditation): Focus only on your breath and your feet while walking.

3. Drink water, but in small sips. Cool water passing down the throat activates the parasympathetic system.

4. Listen to soothing music (Music = Dopamine). Listening to your favorite calming songs lowers Blood Pressure.

5. Stop the habit of 'immediate replies.' 80% of people regret what they say in anger.

What is your secret to managing anger? Please share in the comments.

Anger is a human emotion, but if understood and managed well, it can actually save you. Because expressing anger is not the only way; smartly handling it protects your heart.
