Sometimes It Feels Like...
Sometimes it feels like... If I start writing about what I see daily in the ICU, the timeline would be filled only with stories.
This morning, the ICU rounds began... And the very first patient set the tone for the day.
A 23-year-old unmarried woman. There were many family disputes at home. She had a few complaints.
Her history was unclear.
An USG was done... It revealed a 12-week pregnancy.
In an instant, it became clear that today was not just about medical management... But also about handling emotions, silence, family drama, and reality all together.
We turned to the next bed.
A 20-year-old newly married woman. Phenyl consumption. A whole bottle.
For a moment, a strange thought crossed my mind... Despite telling patients all day to "drink plenty of water," many do not drink enough.
And this girl could drink a whole bottle of phenyl as if it were a cold drink.
When a person emotionally collapses... they probably do not taste the poison.
Next bed.
A 35-year-old woman. Mother of two children. Rat killing poison.
Nearby, there was tension between husband and wife, Arguments about divorce.
The husband was insisting. She was denying.
I calmly asked her, "Was this really a suicide attempt... or just a scare tactic?"
She said, "No doctor, I really want to die."
I asked again, "On one hand you say you won't give a divorce... and on the other, you say you want to die..."
She was silent for a moment.
Perhaps for the first time, she heard her own words herself.
By then, my assistants were also aware of how dangerous rat poison is and aggressive treatment had already started. Despite the best treatment, mortality with rat killing poison is high.
An impulsive decision... But the cost can be lifelong.
Many more patients remain for rounds.
Sometimes it feels like Minds are getting more exhausted than bodies in society.
There are guidelines for BP, sugar, infections... But for broken relationships, Loneliness, Emotionally exhausted minds, There is no protocol.
And to be honest... Not everyone can cope.
In the coming decade, Not only will diseases increase in the ICU... But emotional collapse will also rise.
Because some people do not attempt to die... They have just stopped living from within.
