Guilt: The Unspoken Pain in the ICU

Guilt: Regret / Blame

The 'unspoken pain' seen in the ICU.

"Doctor... did we do something wrong?"

This question is often not spoken in words, but in the ICU, it is clearly visible on faces.

The patient is breathing, but the relatives sitting nearby are in a different kind of distress:

Guilt - blame, regret, and an unspoken sorrow.

How is this guilt felt? * Moist silence in the eyes, wanting to speak but unable to. * An unconscious confession - "We should have taken better care..." * A cautious touch – as if it's the last time. * Looking at each other, searching for fault – "Did anyone pay attention?"

What causes this guilt? * That test, which was postponed. * That time, which could have been made. * That advice, which was not listened to. * That one visit, that conversation, which never happened.

Guilt is not created by illness, but by the chaos of living without giving time.

It's not a fault, but it is the 'truth'. And it is seen daily in the ICU... without words.
