If You Want a Calm Mind, Change Your Morning Routine
Many people say they don't sleep well, feel irritable, and can't focus. Their reports are normal, and life routine is ongoing, but they don't feel settled mentally.
A crucial factor behind this is serotonin.
What is Serotonin?
Serotonin is a chemical produced in the brain that affects mental stability, sleep, and appetite.
It doesn't directly 'give happiness' but prevents the mind from becoming too unstable.
What is its role in the body?
1. Mood stability: Helps prevent extreme emotional fluctuations, thereby reducing irritability and restlessness. 2. Sleep regulation: Melatonin is produced from serotonin. Therefore, if serotonin levels are adequate, the sleep cycle improves. 3. Appetite control: Serotonin plays a role in the signals of hunger and satiety. 4. Stress response modulation: Helps balance how intense the body's reaction will be when under stress.
What happens if it's low?
- Insomnia / Waking up in the middle of the night - Constant fatigue, inability to focus - Irritability, restlessness - Changes in appetite
This means the problem isn't just about 'mood,' but about mental balance.
What can you do to improve Serotonin? (Evidence-based habits)
1. Morning sunlight (15–20 minutes): A signal goes from the eyes (retina) to the brain, activating the serotonin pathway. 2. Regular movement (walking / light exercise): Improves the balance of brain chemicals, affecting both mood and energy. 3. Maintain a fixed sleep schedule: Keeps the serotonin–melatonin cycle regular. Avoid screens late at night. 4. Balanced diet (protein sources): Provides tryptophan (an essential component for serotonin). Include pulses, legumes, eggs, and milk. 5. Social interaction: Complete isolation makes the mind unstable; even simple conversation can be protective.
Today, many people use the word 'stress'.
But in reality, irregular sleep + less sunlight + less movement is the bigger issue.
Happiness cannot be found by searching, and motivation doesn't last forever.
If the mind is kept stable, both come automatically.
No big changes are needed… just fix your morning.
Sunlight + walking – these two changes work on brain chemistry.
