Is Your BP Machine Giving False Readings?
"Is your BP machine giving false readings?"
This question has become very common in OPD.
Many patients say, "Sir, my BP is normal at home but high in the clinic," or "The machine shows different BP readings every day."
Often, the machine is not wrong; the measurement technique is incorrect.
1. BP is not a static number; it can change due to: - Stress - Lack of sleep - Anxiety - Pain - Tea/coffee - Physical activity
Therefore, trends are more important than a single reading.
2. The method of measuring BP is very important: - Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring BP - Keep your arm at heart level - Do not talk during measurement - Do not measure BP immediately after walking - Do not measure BP immediately after tea/coffee
If the technique is wrong, the machine may seem inaccurate.
3. Which BP machine should you use? Many ask this question. In my opinion: - Upper arm automatic BP monitors are more reliable - Proper cuff size for the arm is important - Choose a validated and trusted brand
Wrist BP machines can sometimes give inaccurate readings.
4. Some people have high BP only in the clinic. This is called White Coat Hypertension. Some have normal BP in the clinic but high at home. This is called Masked Hypertension. Often, these conditions are overlooked.
5. Is home BP monitoring useful? Very useful because: - It shows patterns - Helps understand treatment response - Shows lifestyle impact - Increases patient awareness about health
Many patients now track BP remotely.
At Just For Hearts Program, many people regularly track BP, pulse, sleep, and lifestyle.
Future healthcare is not just hospital visits but continuous monitoring and timely action.
BP is not just a number; it signals internal stress, lifestyle, and blood vessels' health.
Do you have a BP machine at home? How regularly do you check your BP?
