Overthinking: More Than Just Thoughts, It's a Metabolic Disturbance
Overthinking is more than just thoughts; it's a habit that initiates metabolic disturbance, and it can be changed.
What is Overthinking? It means your brain is constantly in an alert mode. * This increases cortisol (the stress hormone). * It worsens sleep quality. * It makes sugar and BP control difficult.
How to reduce Overthinking? These aren't just "tips"; you need to teach your brain new habits.
1. Thought Closure Why does your brain stay active at night? Because tasks feel incomplete. Before sleeping, take 2 minutes to write down: * One important task for tomorrow. * Its first step. This gives your brain a signal: "I won't forget this," and reduces thoughts.
2. Set a Thinking Time We try to stop thinking all day, which often makes it worse. Set a specific time during the day (e.g., 7 PM for 10 minutes). Do all your thinking during that time. If a thought comes at other times, tell yourself, "I'll deal with it later." Your brain will gradually learn discipline.
3. Body-first Reset Controlling the mind is difficult; controlling the body is easier. Do this for 5 minutes: * Breathe in through your nose. * Exhale slowly and for a longer duration. (Exhale longer than inhale). This relaxes your body, lowers your heart rate, and sends a signal to your brain that "it's safe."
4. Present Moment Technique What is overthinking? It's thinking too much about the future. So, bring your brain to the present. A simple method: Look around and state: * 5 things I can see. * 4 things I can touch. * 3 sounds I can hear. Example: table, phone, pen, door, light. Then touch a chair with your hand. Your brain perceives, "I am safe, I am okay now," which helps stop thoughts.
5. Input Control Using mobile, watching reels, or news at night overloads your brain, increasing thoughts. Turn off screens 30-60 minutes before sleeping. Do a simple activity (walking, reading, sitting quietly).
6. Fix Your Routine When times are not fixed, it makes the brain unstable. Maintain the same time daily for: * Sleeping * Waking up * Meals This gives your brain predictability and reduces anxiety.
The goal isn't to stop overthinking, but to give it the right direction. Reducing overthinking isn't just about calming the mind; it's about stabilizing your metabolism. * Sugar * BP * Sleep The mind is also a metabolic organ. For change, tracking and routine are essential, not just information. Basic tracking and self-assessment are always free on Just For Hearts. Start today.
