Oxidative Stress: The "Smoke" Produced During Energy Generation
We eat, walk, think... All this is possible because energy is produced in the body.
But one thing we often don't realize is that "smoke" is also produced in the body during energy generation.
What is this "smoke"?
During energy production, some Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are formed.
This is called Oxidative Stress.
A simple example:
Gas burns → heat is produced → but smoke is also generated
Similarly in the body:
Energy (ATP) is produced and "chemical smoke" is also generated.
When does the problem occur?
As long as this "smoke" is cleared on time, there is no problem.
But when:
- Too much "smoke" is produced - Or cleaning is insufficient
Then Oxidative Stress increases.
Impact on the body: This stress gradually damages:
- Cell walls - Proteins - DNA
And then inflammation begins.
Experience in OPD:
Many patients say, "I feel tired... but reports are normal." In such cases, stress might be occurring at the cellular level.
Lifestyle impact: - Processed diet - High sugar - Low physical activity - Lack of sleep - Chronic stress
All these gradually increase the "smoke" and can lead to chronic inflammation.
The body has an antioxidant system (a natural cleaning mechanism for the "smoke").
But when "more smoke, less cleaning" happens, an imbalance is created.
Antioxidants: How does the body perform this cleaning? More on this in the next post.
Just as important as generating energy is controlling the "smoke" produced in that process.
