Pranayama for Heart Patients: What to Do and What to Avoid

Just For Hearts1 min read

Pranayama can act like medicine for the heart, but it is important to choose the right type, time, and method.

Not all types of pranayama are beneficial for the heart. Keep these 5 points in mind:

1. Anulom-Vilom is the safest pranayama! ✅ - Slow inhalation and exhalation activate the parasympathetic nervous system. - Blood Pressure and heart rate decrease, and stress levels reduce. Reference: Indian Heart Journal, 2017

2. Avoid Kapalbhati if you have heart conditions! âš ī¸ - Forceful and rapid breathing increases intrathoracic pressure, putting strain on the heart. - Those with unstable angina or recent bypass/angioplasty should completely avoid it.

3. Bhramari: Ideal for a calm mind! đŸ§˜â€â™‚ī¸ - The sound of 'Om' affects the vagus nerve, increasing relaxation. - Improves Heart Rate Variability (HRV), important for long-term heart health. Reference: International Journal of Yoga, 2020

4. Avoid breath retention! đŸšĢ - Holding breath for long reduces oxygen and increases carbon dioxide. - This can cause ECG changes, arrhythmia, or chest discomfort. - Those with high BP or recent cardiac surgery should avoid it.

5. A little daily practice is the real key! 📅 - 5–10 minutes of daily practice is sufficient for the heart. - Combining many types can cause overload. - Take guidance from a certified yoga trainer.
