Understanding Dengue Fever: Stay Calm and Informed
Understanding Dengue Fever:
1. Not everyone with dengue needs hospital admission. • 80% of patients recover from the fever on their own.
2. Fever and low platelets alone do not require hospitalization. • Clinical symptoms of the patient are more important than just reports.
3. Transfusion is needed only if platelets are below 20,000 and there is bleeding. • Giving transfusion based solely on platelet count increases cost and risk.
4. In the first 3-4 days, fever can rise to around 104°F, then suddenly drops, but platelets decrease afterward.
5. The most critical phase is the 24-48 hours after the fever subsides. • This is the time for close observation, hydration, and proper medical advice.
6. Excessive IV fluids in dengue can be dangerous. • The body needs only the required amount of fluids; otherwise, fluid can accumulate in the lungs.
7. Focus in dengue should not be only on platelets but also on bleeding, blood pressure, alertness, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
8. Many patients undergo unnecessary hospital stays, expensive ICU care, and transfusion therapy due to panic, which can be avoided.
Patients and relatives often have many questions about this illness.
If you have questions, like and repost, then ask; you will definitely get answers.
