What Exactly Should You Have for Breakfast?
"Sir, what exactly should I have for breakfast?"
I have been hearing this question for over 25 years now... and the answer is never the same because everyone's body, work, and needs are different!
So let's decide the 'prescription' for your breakfast based on your lifestyle:
1. Office / Laptop workers (Sedentary workers, 8-10 hours sitting): → A breakfast that supports digestion, is energizing but low in calories ✅ Examples: Moong dal upma, thalipeeth with curd, chana dal poha ☕ Tea is fine, but start your morning with warm water first
2. Factory / Construction / Field Workers (Physical labor): → A breakfast that provides plenty of strength but controls sugar and fats well ✅ Examples: Boiled eggs with 2 chapatis, misal with buttermilk, moong usal with rice 🥚 Non-veg option: Egg bhurji with bhakri or chicken stew with rice
3. For Diabetic patients: → Important to keep the glycemic index low ✅ Examples: Lentil dosa, oats with nuts and curd, vegetable khichdi 🚫 Avoid white bread, sugary cereals, packaged juices
4. For Cardiac Patients / High BP / High Cholesterol: → Low fats, high fiber, easy to digest ✅ Examples: Oats poha, fruits with curd, soaked almonds with upma 🫀 Scientific Tip: Soluble fiber in breakfast helps reduce LDL
5. For Obesity / Weight loss: → Do not skip breakfast but control portions ✅ Examples: Mixed sprouts salad, boiled eggs with soup, oats thalipeeth 💡 Add: 10 minutes of walking afterward increases fat burn
6. For Healthy Normal individuals - prevention is the best treatment: → Organic, minimally processed, homemade food ✅ Examples: Avoid sheera but upma is fine; avoid bread butter but chapati roll is fine 🥛 Milk is okay if digestible; fruits with nuts is an easy combo!
7. For those doing Intermittent Fasting (IF 16:8): → Take breakfast as the first meal around 11–12 am ✅ Examples: Boiled eggs with soaked almonds, moong dal usal, oats with curd 💡 While doing IF, plenty of water and electrolytes are important 🚫 Tea/coffee should be unsweetened; avoid sugar/milk during fasting window
📅 What is the right time for breakfast? • For general individuals: within 1–1.5 hours after waking (7:30–8:30 am) • For IF practitioners: first meal at 11–12 am • Important: Do not skip breakfast, it kickstarts your metabolism.
Breakfast = The first help to your body It should not just fill your stomach but help you walk, think, and prevent diseases!
