Platelet Transfusion: When Is It Really Needed?

"Platelets are low... do I need a transfusion?"

Don't panic – platelet transfusion is not done just based on the report!

1. Transfusion is not required just because the platelet count is low.

2. It is needed if the count is below 10,000 and there is bleeding.

3. For patients with Dengue, undergoing chemotherapy, or in ICU, the decision depends on the clinical condition.

4. There are two types: RDP (₹500–₹1000) – for general use SDP (₹8000–₹12000) – for critical patients

5. SDP is more effective.

6. Blood group ideally should match, but in emergencies, compatible blood is acceptable.

7. The effect of platelet transfusion is temporary, lasting 3–5 days.

8. Platelet count changes twice a day – testing is needed according to clinical condition.

9. Papaya, kiwi, milk are diet supportive but not scientifically proven treatments.

10. The final decision is made by the doctor – platelet management depends on the patient's condition, not just the count!
