Which Type of Diabetes Do I Have: Type 1, Type 2, LADA, or Type 3?

A common question asked is: Which type of diabetes do I have - Type 1, Type 2, LADA, or Type 3?

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is autoimmune and usually appears in childhood. The body's immune system attacks the beta cells, stopping insulin production. Symptoms include sudden weight loss, thirst, and frequent urination at a young age. Tests show low C-Peptide and positive Anti-GAD antibodies. Treatment requires insulin. Reversal is not possible, but good control can be maintained.

Type 2 DM is lifestyle or resistance-based. It occurs at an older age with weight gain, lack of exercise, and reduced insulin effectiveness. Tests show HbA1c above 6.5%, elevated FBS/PPBS, and normal or high C-Peptide. Treatment includes diet, exercise, and medicines like Metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors. Reversal is possible if changes are made timely.

LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults) is an autoimmune type but occurs at an age similar to Type 2 (30-50 years). Initially, it resembles Type 2 but gradually requires insulin. Tests show positive Anti-GAD and gradually decreasing C-Peptide. Treatment starts with oral medicines and later insulin is needed. Reversal chances are low, but early diagnosis can prevent long-term complications.

Type 3 is brain-related and linked to Alzheimer's. Some researchers call Alzheimer's Type 3 Diabetes. Insulin resistance increases in the brain causing cognitive decline. More research is ongoing, but controlling blood sugar can reduce dementia risk.

Important tests include: - C-Peptide to assess insulin production - Anti-GAD / Autoimmune Panel to identify Type 1 and LADA - HbA1c / FBS / PPBS to check sugar control - Ketone test for sudden weight loss and weakness

Why is it important to identify the type? Correct type identification means accurate diagnosis, proper treatment, and possibility of reversal. Wrong diagnosis leads to wrong treatment and increased complications.
