Why Do Legs Swell Even When All Tests Are Normal?
"Why do legs swell even when all tests are normal?" This is a question I hear daily in the OPD.
Often, reports come back perfect, but the body is signaling something different.
📍 Remember this important truth: Normal reports ≠ Perfect metabolic balance
Swelling (Pedal edema) is not a disease itself but a signal of an ongoing imbalance in the body.
⚠️ Why does swelling occur despite normal reports?
1️⃣ Insulin resistance / Metabolic syndrome Sugar does not properly enter the cells → microscopic inflammation → swelling 📚 Reference: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism
2️⃣ Sodium–water retention Some bodies retain excess salt and water 📚 Reference: American Journal of Physiology
3️⃣ Sitting all day Leg muscles become inactive → reduced venous return → swelling
4️⃣ Hormonal shifts Common during PMS / peri-menopause / post-menopause 📚 Reference: Endocrine Reviews
5️⃣ Poor sleep + excess salt Less sleep → increased cortisol → water retention
✅ What to do? (Actionable, practical)
6️⃣ Walk at least 30–40 minutes daily → improves circulation → reduces swelling
7️⃣ Salt intake should not be "low," but "mindful" → packaged foods, pickles, snacks = hidden sodium
8️⃣ Directly target insulin resistance → work on weight, waist, sugar spikes
9️⃣ Do not ignore swelling just because there is no pain → swelling is a silent alarm
🔟 If swelling persists, follow-up is necessary → just because it is not visible does not mean it is harmless
📌 The body speaks; we must listen.
