Zone 2 Exercise – Best for Heart Health but Often Overlooked
1. What is Zone 2? It is 60–70% of your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR = 220 – age). Example: Age 40 → Zone 2 HR ~108–126 bpm.
2. How to identify Zone 2? Talk test: You can speak comfortably but cannot sing. Using a smartwatch or HR monitor is more accurate.
3. Suitable exercises for Zone 2: Brisk walking, light jogging, cycling on flat roads, swimming, elliptical training.
4. Benefits: The body primarily uses fat as fuel. Insulin sensitivity improves, aiding diabetes control. Mitochondria strengthen, improving energy utilization. Endurance increases; heart efficiency improves without excessive strain.
5. Who should do it? Those aiming for weight loss, people with diabetes, those wanting to keep their heart healthy, beginners to intermediate fitness levels.
6. How long? 3–5 days a week, 30–45 minutes is sufficient. Beginners should start with 10–15 minutes.
7. What to avoid? Doing high-intensity Zone 4–5 exercises daily leads to fatigue and injury risk. Skipping Zone 2 means losing fat-burning and endurance benefits.
8. How to track? Smartwatch or chest strap HR monitors are useful (cost ₹2,000–₹15,000). If budget is limited, the talk test is a simple alternative.
9. Remember: Zone 2 is a low stress, high benefit zone. Maintain consistency, progress gradually, and improve both heart health and stamina.
Zone 2 = 60–70% of max HR. It burns fat, builds endurance, and keeps the heart healthy without high stress. Consistency matters more than intensity.
