Branded vs Generic Medicines – Why So Much Confusion?
Branded vs Generic Medicines – Why is there so much confusion? Let's explore the reasons:
1. The medicine prescribed by the doctor is expensive, but when asked at the medical store, "This is the generic, cheaper one," it creates doubt.
2. The pharmacist automatically gives a different brand, leading to questions like, "Is it okay to switch? Will not following the doctor's prescription cause harm?"
3. On the internet, WhatsApp, and YouTube, people say – "Generic means the same medicine, branded is just a way to make money!"
4. For the same illness, two patients take different medicines, making one wonder, "Am I being given more than necessary?"
5. Long-term medicines seem expensive, so monthly costs make people look for cheaper options.
6. Free medicines are available in government hospitals, so why do private doctors prescribe different medicines?
7. Pharmaceutical companies advertise and market branded medicines more, making them popular while generics are neglected.
8. There is less communication between doctors and pharmacists, leaving patients confused about whom to trust.
9. Patients and caregivers often lack pharmacology knowledge, so they don't understand if "Salt is the same" or if "Technology is different."
10. Doctors face accusations like "They prescribe brands for commission," but the clinical experience and trust behind their choices are overlooked.
In the next post, we will see – What exactly is the difference between generic and branded medicines? And what should patients choose?
But before that… Do you think these questions are true? What does your experience say? Please write in the comments.
