Is Your Walking Routine Right for Managing Blood Pressure, Diabetes, and Weight?
Do you have Blood Pressure issues? Is your sugar level rising? Is your weight not reducing? Then, is the way you are walking appropriate?
Proper walking methods for people with High BP: 1. Slow to medium speed: Walk at 4–5 km/hr, not fast, because fast walking can increase BP. 2. Maintain consistency: 30 minutes daily, at least 5 days a week. 3. Walk to reduce stress: Walk in a calm, natural environment – it also benefits mental health. 4. Listen to your body signals: Stop if you feel dizziness, breathlessness, or heaviness. Drink water.
Walking tips for people with Diabetes: 1. Do not walk on an empty stomach: Especially diabetics should eat something before walking. 2. Medium to brisk pace: 5–6 km/hr pace improves insulin sensitivity. 3. Walk after meals: 10–15 minutes of walking post-meal reduces postprandial sugar. 4. Foot care: Good sports shoes are necessary due to the risk of diabetic foot.
Walking advice for Overweight/Obese patients: 1. Low-impact but long duration: Gradually increase walking time, starting from 20 minutes to 45 minutes. 2. Walk on inclines or slopes: Effective for fat burning (e.g., park hills). 3. Consistency over speed: Daily regular walking is better than intense walking only on Sundays. 4. Joint care: Use proper shoes to avoid knee strain; consult a physiotherapist if needed.
What if a patient has BP, Diabetes, and Weight issues together? 1. Start slow, build gradually. For example, start with 15-20 minutes and then increase time. 2. Mixed style walking: Flat surface + gentle incline + short walk after meals. 3. When to walk? Morning walks are good, but a light 10-minute walk after dinner is essential. 4. Tracking: Keep weekly track of BP, sugar, and weight.
Is your walking method appropriate? - Just walking doesn’t mean you are walking correctly. - Is your walking speed and duration suitable for your health condition?
