Why Do Legs Swell Only in the Evening? Causes and Care
"Leg swelling only in the evening" is a common complaint that can sometimes indicate serious health issues. Here's what you need to know:
1. Normal Causes (Healthy Individuals): - Sitting or standing all day: Gravity causes fluid to accumulate in the legs, especially when staying in one position. - Hot weather: Heat dilates blood vessels causing fluids to leak out, leading to swelling. - Excess salt intake: High sodium causes the body to retain water, resulting in swelling. - Footwear: Tight boots, sandals, or flat shoes can reduce circulation, making evening swelling routine.
2. Lifestyle Disorders: - Diabetes/Obesity: Insulin resistance and poor circulation cause early vascular damage and leakage from small blood vessels. - High Blood Pressure and Salt Retention: Some BP medications like calcium channel blockers may increase swelling. Legs may feel heavy in the evening. - Lack of activity: Low muscle pump activity reduces venous return causing fluid pooling.
3. Serious Causes: - Heart Failure: The heart cannot pump blood effectively, causing swelling in legs, heels, and ankles. Both legs swell equally, with fatigue and breathlessness. - Kidney Disorders: Protein loss and fluid leakage cause swelling especially in legs, eyes, and face. - Liver Disease (Fatty liver/Cirrhosis): Low albumin causes fluid leakage leading to leg swelling and abdominal bloating. - Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Swelling, pain, and warmth in one leg require urgent testing.
When to get tested? - Swelling occurs daily only in the evening. - Severe swelling and fever in one leg. - Swelling does not reduce in the morning. - Changes in weight, breathing, or urination. - Sudden tightness in shoes.
Daily Tips: 1. Elevate legs while sleeping using a wedge pillow. 2. Walk every 45 minutes; take sitting breaks. 3. Reduce salt intake and drink adequate water. 4. Use light compressive stockings after consulting a doctor. 5. Monitor weight, sugar, and BP regularly.
Evening leg swelling can be normal but may hide future health risks. Pay attention, identify early, and improve your health!
