Fasting with Diabetes: Should You Fast or Not?

Just For Hearts1 min read

Fasting, when done properly, can be beneficial for the body—even for people with diabetes!

Here are some important rules for diabetic patients who want to fast:

1. Consult your doctor – medication or insulin adjustments may be necessary.

2. To avoid low sugar, do not stay continuously hungry; eat small amounts frequently.

3. Drink plenty of liquids, but without sugar (water, buttermilk, coconut water).

4. Check your blood sugar 2–3 times a day.

5. Recognize symptoms of hypoglycemia – fatigue, sweating, dizziness; if these occur, break your fast.

6. When breaking the fast, eat light food that is easy to digest and low in sugar.

7. Avoid fasting if your A1c is above 9, if you have a history of low sugar, pregnancy, or kidney problems.

Remember, fasting does not mean just staying hungry—it requires discipline and planning!
