Grief Hurts Both Mind and Heart
Grief is not just sadness from a breakup; it is the pain felt when someone close leaves us—parents, spouse, children, friends, patients, or mentors.
This grief affects the body as well, and I have witnessed this repeatedly.
What does grief do to the body? From my experience: 1. Constant mental stress increases Blood Pressure and blood sugar. 2. Sleeplessness adds strain on the heart and brain. 3. Loss of appetite or overeating disrupts weight and metabolic control. 4. Forgetting or stopping medicines leads to recurrence of old ailments. 5. Loneliness and reduced physical activity affect blood circulation and overall health. 6. Days pass but grief accumulates in the body causing inflammation, fatigue, and decreased immunity. 7. Broken Heart Syndrome (Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy) – severe grief can directly weaken the heart (rare but I have seen it).
There is no cure for grief, but it can be faced. Taking care of both body and mind helps the heart find the courage to smile again.
