Blood Pressure
Why Is It Important to Measure Your Blood Pressure Every Morning?
Measuring your Blood Pressure (BP) every morning is crucial for heart health and early detection of potential risks.
1. Regular morning BP measurement is the first step towards protecting your heart. People over 50, those with Diabetes, kidney problems, previous Heart Attack or stroke, and those with high BP should definitely check their BP after waking up.
2. The morning BP surge can be dangerous for many. BP rises in the first 1-2 hours after waking up, known as Morning BP Surge. If uncontrolled, it doubles the risk of Heart Attack. (Reference: AHA, 2023 guidelines)
3. The ideal time to measure BP is 30–60 minutes after waking, while resting. Measuring at the same time daily before medicines, tea, or exercise gives a true trend.
4. Measuring BP before taking medication helps understand the medicine's effect, avoiding under- or over-treatment.
5. What is the ideal BP reading? For healthy individuals: less than 120/80 mmHg. For high BP patients: less than 130/80 mmHg. (Reference: ACC/AHA 2017, ESC/ESH 2023)
6. If your BP is consistently above 140/90, please consult a doctor. Do not delay thinking your BP is normal.
7. Not everyone needs daily BP measurement. If healthy, symptom-free, and not on medication, measuring 2-3 times a week is sufficient.
8. Use a validated digital arm monitor at home for accuracy. Avoid wrist monitors. Take two readings each time and consider the average.
9. Do not hesitate to show your home BP records to your doctor. It greatly influences your medication, dosage, and future plan.
