Stretching Is Not Exercise: Understanding the Difference and Importance of Both
Stretching means lengthening the muscles, increasing flexibility, and reducing muscle tension.
Exercise refers to activities that improve strength, stamina, and heart health, including weight training, cardio, and strengthening exercises.
Here are 10 important stretches to do daily, each held for 20-30 seconds:
1. Hamstring stretch: Stand and spread your legs forward, then bend forward.
2. Calf stretch: Lean against a wall and stretch the back leg.
3. Quad stretch: Keep your shoulder parallel, bend the knee backward and hold the leg.
4. Hip flexor stretch: Step one leg forward and bend forward.
5. Neck side stretch: Tilt your head to one side.
6. Shoulder stretch: Pull your hands in front of your chest.
7. Child’s pose (back stretch): Sit down and slide your hands forward to stretch.
8. Inner thigh (butterfly) stretch: Keep both legs together and bend knees outward.
9. Spinal twist (lie on back): Twist your body slightly while stretching.
10. Ankle circles / wrist flexor-extensor stretch: Move your knees and wrists.
⚠️ Precautions: - Do not stretch until pain occurs; stretch only until you feel slight tension. - If you have original pain or illness, consult a doctor or physiotherapist.
When will you see the difference? If done daily or 5-6 days a week, tension reduces within 1-2 weeks. After 3-4 weeks, you will feel relief while walking or bending, and your posture improves.
